Challenges

The water–energy–food nexus is about understanding and managing often-competing interests while ensuring the integrity of ecosystems. The first challenge in dealing with the water–energy–food nexus is to understand it. The second challenge is to put the water–energy–food nexus concept into action. Specifically, these actions include the following:
  • Need to significantly and rapidly reduce emissions to avoid the worst effects of climate crises
  • Inefficient energy generation and distribution
  • Water management and agrifood supply chain being considered as a separate pieces from energy and community development
  • Limited coordination amongst public and the private sector, and with community members
  • Lack of integrated planning geared towards implementation and long-term sustainability
  • Insufficient support for non-traditional, clean technologies

Our news
January 2024: After two weeks of negotiations, countries agreed to their response to the first Global Stocktake (GST) under the Paris Agreement. In addition to transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems, the UAE Consensus affirmed the urgent need to reverse global deforestation by 2030 through the Paris Agreement.
Earthjustice works alongside communities impacted by coal, oil, and gas and uses the power of the law to loosen the fossil fuel industry’s destructive grip on our world.
From fracked gas to oil pipelines to coal ash dumps, the fossil fuel industry is poisoning communities and driving climate change.
We must move beyond fossil fuels once and for all and power our entire society with pollution-free 100% clean energy.

Kyrgyz officials say they have signed a contract with foreign investors to start building an "eco-city" near the picturesque shores of Lake Issyk-Kul in the country's north, despite concerns the multibillion-dollar project could harm the environment.
